August 20, 2025 – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA) convened leading eye health professionals, policymakers, and development partners today for a high-level regional meeting aimed at advancing ophthalmic care and strengthening health systems across Africa.
The gathering brought together ophthalmologists, surgeons, medical educators, and public health experts from Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa to discuss strategies for improving access to quality eye care services. The meeting focused on addressing preventable blindness, expanding specialist training programs, and integrating eye health into national healthcare priorities.
COECSA leadership emphasized the urgent need to scale up human resource capacity in ophthalmology, particularly in underserved rural communities where access to eye care remains limited. Discussions highlighted innovations in cataract surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, diabetic retinopathy management, and digital health technologies that can improve early detection and treatment outcomes.
Participants also explored partnerships with ministries of health, universities, and international organizations to enhance research, clinical training, and infrastructure development. Strengthening regional collaboration and harmonizing professional standards were identified as key pillars for sustainable growth in the sector.
Ethiopia’s expanding healthcare reforms and investment in medical education were recognized as critical drivers in improving eye health outcomes nationwide. The event reaffirmed COECSA’s commitment to reducing avoidable blindness and ensuring equitable access to quality ophthalmic services across the continent.
